Telugu Playback Singer Sudhamayi
Sudhamayi is the upcoming singer into the Telugu music industry. With her latest hit in Ram Charan Teja's Magadheera, she got into much popularity. She recently visited Denver for a private show, along with the music director, singer Mr. Nihal. DesiShades met with her for few minutes. Here are the excerpts of the interview.
DesiShades: Welcome Sudhamayi garu. We are very happy to see here in Denver. Can you please tell about yourself?
Sudha: Nihal (K.V Srinivas) is my uncle. At the age of 4 he planted the seed of music in me. It's in the family as well. Right from my childhood I am used to singing. I grew up in Calcutta. I was a student of Balvihar. They had an International Religious festival at Calcutta, where everyone had to represent their religion. There was huge crowd of 3000 people. I represented Hinduism. I chanted Bhagavad Gita. That was my debut at the age of 6 years. My journey of music started from here. Formally I didn't learn classical music as it was difficult for me to manage as my father was moving to different places frequently. I always had regular touch with classical music. I learned classical music just to refine my voice. All these I have learnt form Nihal, who is my guru. From there I moved to another teacher Mrs. Chellayini, who is the Principal in Ramdas Music College, Hyderabad. After that I moved to Balasubramanyam garu, where I have learnt till Kritis. I was an active kid in school and used to participate in lot of cultural activities, won lot of prizes.
In my 11th standard I have been awarded the best student for the school, which is an unforgettable moment. I did my education in Kendriya Vidyalaya. From there I was sent as a delegate to the International festival. Out of 105 students, 5students were selected for Children's jury panel and I was among them. I was basically a child judge there. These selections were done by Mr. Nara Chandra Babu Naidu garu, former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. All this was based on my singing. I participated in ‘Padalani Undi', program conducted by Dr, S.P. Balasubramanyam Garu. My first show was ‘Paduthaa Theeyaga' in ETV. I was a semi finalist at this. I have learnt from Balu garu. He is very nice, down to earth person. I moved to US in 2004. I was moving to and fro to India and US, as I had to complete my education in India. When I am in US I used to sing. I started singing in movies, when Nihal was singing in ‘Jai Veera Hanuman'. This was when I was in my 7th and 8th grade. I used be with all the seniors and sing with them. After that I recorded my voice for the first time for the movie Chitram. Then I sang for Nee Kosam, and sang for Raj garu. I basically started with chorus and background. It is really very hard to be a singer in the front. I also sang all the back ground for Yuvaraju movie by Mahesh Babu. I also sang for Chakri garu, who used to do a lot of private albums. I was married in 2007. Sa-ri-ga-ma-pa was one great program which made to come to the limelight. I reached up to the top 5 levels. Koti garu gave a chance to sing a song in the movie called Target. That was my solo. I sang with Sri Krishna. After this, Keeravani Sir gave me a chance in the movie Magadheera. Though it was a supportive vocal, he gave me a main role. The biggest achievement in my life is that sang in front of Lord Balaji in Tirupathi. I sang in the sahasra deepalankarana seva. I sang a lot to TTD, travelled a lot to Singapore, Malaysia, and performed on behalf of TTD. I used to sing at Kalyana Srinivasam, a program organized by TTD.
DesiShades: How are you balancing your life between India and US?
Sudha: I am in US now. I am here to make career in Software, also trying to balance my singing. It's easy here to continue singing in the weekends, even if I work for five days in a week.
DesiShades: Your education and profession
Sudha: I am a commerce graduate. I was a media person back home in India. I used to work for TV9. I was full time anchor. I used to run a live show, where people used to call me and ask questions. TV9 was really good. It gave me lot of popularity.
DesiShades: You had a big career change. And with all the movie stars and musicians, directors, how did you feel?
Sudha: There was a cut throat competition every where. Both are connected to each other. Though I was in the media, I was in the entertainment side. I never chose the hard core news. I used to go on the cultural side. There is not much difference actually.
DesiShades: You were never a dubbing artist? Most of the singers are doing a lot.
Sudha: I did dubbing for about 20 movies. There were small for the side actress. If I would have been in India, I would have dubbed a lot. It doesn't give me that satisfaction as I am in singing.
DesiShades: Tell us about your family, and their cooperation to your career.
Sudha: My husband knew me before. We were working together. We were colleagues. We worked at Dell Computers. My mother-in-law saw me performing in TV. She liked me and we got married. In 2007 there happened a drastic change. TTD, TV9 and Sa-ri-ga-ma-pa all these happened after marriage. This shows how supportive was my family and my husband. I couldn't have done all this with out their support. We lived in a joint family. My husband is very caring. He always puts me first. He always trusted me and my balance. My mother-in-law used to accompany me for some recordings.
DesiShades: Thanks Sudhamayi garu, for your time. We wish you the best for a bright future.
Sudha: Thanks much.
